Seeing the Patterned World: the Cosmos as Layered Microcosms

With the rise of cognitive science and the popularity of non-reductionist theories in everything from biology to city planning, the ancient vision of a structural relationship between macrocosm and microcosm is once again becoming relevant. Although some modern thinkers are arriving by their own means at the embedded patterning of what is real, this lecture will ask whether the ancient understanding of the cosmos can enter into conversation with these more recent developments? We will look at how fractality is used everywhere in traditional Christianity, from architecture to mystical theology, and explore how such examples can become a path for the reintroduction of a precise and intuitive theory of the macrocosm-microcosm relationship. Using contemporary notions like relevance, this talk will argue that consciousness is the linchpin for the reintegration of ancient thought into the modern world.

Jonathan Pageau is a French-Canadian icon carver and public intellectual, known for exploring the deeper patterns and symbolism underlying contemporary culture, faith, and society. Through his widely followed YouTube Channel, podcast, blog, and platform for online courses, The Symbolic World, he engages hundreds of thousands of followers in discussions about how timeless stories and ancient symbols illuminate modern life.
